Using Your Brain's Natural Filter to Your Advantage

One function of the reticular formation is to filter out information we receive through our senses.

Throughout the day there are many things that go on around us that we are not completely aware of. That is because our brains keep a certain amount of the information from completely entering our consciousness.
For the most part, this is a good thing. We would be overwhelmed with information is we had to process everything going on around us. But our filters are adjusted in certain ways that may hinder us as well.
One such way is when we focus on the negative aspects of our lives. If we keep looking at how bad things are, our filters will keep track of these negative events and ensure we are aware of them all the time.
To keep this from happening, be grateful for all the good things around you. Focus on how great your coffee tasted or how good it felt to hug your partner good morning. Keep pictures of happy places or listen to music that evokes pleasant memories.
This will keep you in a good frame of mind and focusing on the positive things in your life. Eventually your filter will pick up on this and you will start to see everything in a better light.
Once this happens, you will be happier and you will start seeing ways to maintain this joy in your life. Throughout the day there are many things that go on around us that we are not completely aware of.
